The primary objective of a company’s management is to increase shareholder value.

By buying & holding securities of a company, we are in essence supporting that company and in a small way, rewarding its management.  Whereas, the opposite is true when we sell securities.

Thus, buying & holding the securities of a socially responsible company can be construed as an endorsement of that company’s behavior.
 
AVOIDANCE OR NEGATIVE SCREENING

This is the process by which socially responsible investors avoid investing in companies

w  Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling, Firearms (Fairly Standard)
w  Defense, Oil (Sometimes Added)
u that violate human rights standards
u that have poor records on environmental protection
u that manufacture products that reduce the quality Of life
u that are unfriendly to women & minorities
u that do business in terrorist or repressive states
u that pay unfair wages or provide substandard benefits 
u that employ unethical business or accounting practices
